Legislative Decree No. 1062 establishes the legal framework to guarantee the safety of food intended for human consumption, with the aim of protecting the life and health of people, safeguarding consumer rights and promoting the competitiveness of the actors in the food chain, including animal feed. The standard promotes a preventive and comprehensive approach along the entire chain, recognizing rights such as access to safe food, clear information, protection against fraudulent practices, and redress for damages. It also requires suppliers to comply with sanitary and quality standards, ensure adequate hygiene and labeling conditions, provide understandable information, and take corrective measures in the event of unforeseen risks. The Permanent Multisectoral Commission on Food Safety was also created to coordinate actions between sectors and civil society. The Ministry of Health, through DIGESA, exercises the technical and regulatory authority on food safety of domestic and imported food, except in the case of fishery and aquaculture products.
