CONAMA Resolution No. 249 establishes the Guidelines for the Atlantic Forest Conservation and Sustainable Development Policy, defining a strategic framework that aims to protect biodiversity, promote sustainable development of natural resources, recover degraded areas, and make sectoral policies compatible with conservation. This policy recognizes the Atlantic Forest as National Heritage according to the 1988 Brazilian Federal Constitution, establishing participatory management mechanisms that involve various sectors of society and levels of government.
