Description

The Protected Areas Act (Act No.14 of 2011) establishes the legal and institutional framework for the designation, management, and conservation of Guyana's National System of Protected Areas. This legislation defines the categories of protected areas, the mechanisms for their establishment, the procedures for management planning, and the responsibilities of the competent authorities. The law incorporates provisions for biodiversity protection, the participation of indigenous and local communities, and the development of sustainable activities compatible with conservation objectives. It constitutes the fundamental legal instrument for the preservation of Guyana's natural heritage and its ecosystem services for present and future generations.
