National Policy for Protection Areas of Rivers, Streams, Creeks and Water Springs (2020-2040)

The National Policy for Protection Areas of Rivers, Streams, Creeks and Water Springs 2020-2040 establishes the strategic guidelines for the conservation, restoration, and sustainable management of water resource protection zones in Costa Rica. This long-term planning instrument articulates inter-institutional actions aimed at protecting water bodies, riparian ecosystems, and water sources to guarantee their ecological integrity and environmental services. The policy promotes the watershed approach, citizen participation, and multi-level coordination for integrated water resource management. It constitutes a national commitment to ensure water availability and quality for present and future generations.
