Comprehensive Plan for the Ecuadorian Amazon (PIA) 2016-2035

Territorial planning instrument approved through Resolution No. 001-2016 of the Board of the Institute for Amazonian Regional Ecodevelopment (ECORAE), signed on June 15, 2016, and published in Official Gazette, Special Edition No. 759, on November 12, 2016. The Comprehensive Plan for the Ecuadorian Amazon (PIA) 2016-2035 replaced the 1998 Master Plan for Amazonian Regional Ecodevelopment and established a long-term vision for sustainable territorial development in Ecuador's six Amazonian provinces. Its overall objective is to promote context-appropriate and sustainable territorial development through biodiversity conservation, improved living conditions and productive diversification consistent with the region's characteristics. The plan integrates economic, social, environmental and cultural dimensions, emphasizing territorial planning, coordination among levels of government, institutional strengthening, the rights of Indigenous peoples and nationalities, ecosystem conservation and sustainable natural resource use. It establishes objectives, strategic guidelines and monitoring mechanisms to guide public management and regional planning. Its original planning horizon extends to 2035. Subsequent Amazonian planning instruments were approved for 2021-2025, so implementation should be assessed in light of later regulatory and planning updates.
