Description
Guyana's Act No. 7 of 1995 establishes the Iwokrama International Centre as an autonomous non-profit institution to manage approximately 371,000 hectares of tropical forest in the heart of Guyana. This legal framework gives the Centre the mandate to promote conservation and sustainable and equitable use of tropical rainforests, generating ecological, economic, and social benefits for the people of Guyana and the world. The law establishes the division of the Iwokrama forest into two zones of equal size: a Sustainable Use Area and a Wilderness Preserve, allowing research activities, training, and development of technologies for sustainable management of forest resources.
