Peru: National Strategy for the Restoration of Degraded Ecosystems and Forest Lands (ProREST) 2021-2030

The National Strategy for the Restoration of Degraded Ecosystems and Forest Lands (ProREST) 2021-2030, approved through Executive Directorate Resolution No. D000134-2021-MIDAGRI-SERFOR-DE, establishes the strategic framework of Peru's National Forest and Wildlife Service (SERFOR) for restoring degraded ecosystems and forest lands. Its overall objective is to restore these areas through a landscape approach that recovers ecosystem goods and services and reduces risks associated with climate change impacts. The strategy defines three specific objectives: restoring the structure and functionality of degraded ecosystems and forest lands in priority areas; strengthening the capacities of stakeholders involved in restoration management and implementation; and improving governance of restoration processes. It aims to reduce the national restoration gap by at least 15 percent by 2030, with more than 330,000 hectares of ecosystems and forest lands undergoing restoration. The strategy includes identifying priority areas, developing restoration projects, promoting financial mechanisms and incentives, supporting research, building technical capacities, and coordinating actions among public institutions, communities, civil society, private companies and international cooperation partners. Its implementation is expected to contribute to biodiversity conservation, ecological recovery, sustainable territorial management and climate resilience.
