Description

The Law creates the National Directorate of Food Control and Veterinary Surveillance, an entity responsible for controlling, monitoring and preventing health risks throughout the food chain, including food quality and safety, zoonoses and veterinary surveillance. It regulates the manufacture, processing, import, export, distribution, marketing, transportation, advertising, and sanitary registration of food, supplements, and related products. It also includes fishing and transport vessels under the Panamanian flag. The National Fund is established to finance food control and veterinary surveillance programs. The law requires sanitary registration for the marketing of regulated products. The main functions of the Directorate include: proposing procedures and standards based on scientific risk assessment, coordinating with national and international entities, establishing health surveillance measures, executing measures for the introduction and inspection of food, issuing sanitary authorizations, and verifying requirements for the processing and marketing of food.
