The Law for the Development of Aquaculture and Fisheries establishes the legal framework to regulate all phases of aquaculture and fishing activities in Ecuador, promoting their sustainable development under an ecosystem approach that prioritizes environmental conservation, food sovereignty, and the rights of nature. The law creates the National Aquaculture and Fisheries System and includes bodies such as the Advisory Council, the Public Research Institute, a research fund, and a national information system. It also promotes the participation of fishers and aquaculture farmers, the rational use of resources, food security, and job creation through health, monitoring, technology, and innovation policies. Concessions must fulfill social and environmental functions, guaranteeing sustainable production and respecting collective and environmental rights. It can be found in Official Registry No. 187, April 21, 2020.
