Description

Decree 5/4/962 prohibits the manufacture, importation, sale, and use of natural or synthetic estrogen-based preparations for sexual neutralization and fattening of animals intended for human consumption. It also restricts the marketing of meat or animal products treated with these substances. Therapeutic uses are exempted under strict veterinary certification and supervision by the Ministry of Livestock and Agriculture. It establishes penalties and technical procedures for analyzing estrogens in animal products. Its objective is to protect public health, comply with international standards, and maintain Uruguay's competitiveness as an exporter of meat products.
