The Costa Rica Musaceae NAMA, launched in April 2022, aims to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from banana and plantain production through a series of specific actions. These include: carbon capture through forest plantations and the integration of trees on farms, the reduction of emissions generated by aerial spraying of fungicides using drones instead of small planes, the reduction of nitrous oxide and carbon dioxide emissions derived from the use of fertilizers and soil amendments, and the optimization of electricity consumption through the installation of solar panels and improvements in the energy efficiency of operations. The strategy establishes two emissions reduction scenarios for the year 2030, with the possibility of intervening in up to 100% of the banana cultivation area and achieving reductions of up to 271 Gg of CO2eq in the most ambitious scenario. To ensure effective implementation, the NAMA incorporates a Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) system that allows recording and evaluating carbon emissions and captures along the musaceae value chain.
