Law on Sustainable Development of Sugar Cane in Mexico

Fecha de inicio: 22/08/2005
Fecha de fin: N/A

Description

The Law aims to regulate activities related to the production, harvesting, industrialization and marketing of sugar cane, considered strategic for the Mexican economy. This law establishes a sustainability framework for the sugar cane agroindustry, in order to improve the profitability and competitiveness of the sector. In addition, it includes provisions to encourage investment, technological development, and promote environmental preservation in sugar cane production areas. National and regional committees are created to regulate production, quality, and the reconciliation of conflicts between producers and processors. The law promotes productive diversification through the creation of the Scientific and Technological Research Center for Sugar Cane (CICTCAÑA), which seeks to develop new varieties and more efficient production technologies. The cogeneration of energy and the production of ethanol, among other sugar cane derivatives, are also encouraged. Payment systems based on the quality of the sugar cane and mechanisms to resolve disputes between the actors in the sector are established.
