The public policy is a trinational initiative promoted by the Río Lempa Trinational Border Commonwealth, which involves El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras, with the objective of conserving and sustainably managing forest resources in the Trifinio region. Strategic and specific actions include establishing a regulatory framework for the conservation of forests and protected areas, promoting strategic alliances between public and private actors for the management of forest ecosystems, implementing a program called Plan Zero to reduce the loss of forest cover to less 1% in ten years, raise awareness and organize local communities for forest conservation, promote ecological tourism and the sustainable management of forests and protected areas, strengthen municipal and trinational public management, including training and raising awareness of local authorities , and promote appropriate technologies for the sustainable use of forests and establish financing mechanisms for the sustainability of these actions. The policy also seeks to involve local actors, communities and private owners in the management and conservation of forest resources, promoting effective environmental governance and citizen participation at all stages of the process.
