This law's main objective is to guarantee the identity and genetic purity, physical, physiological and sanitary quality of seeds, as well as to regulate their research, production and marketing in the country. The competent authority designated for the implementation and supervision of this law is the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG). Among its functions, the MAG must encourage research and production of certified seeds, maintain an updated registry of seed producers and dealers, and verify the quality of imported seeds. In addition, it establishes seed certification processes to guarantee its quality and defines several categories of seeds, such as original genetic seed, basic or foundation seed, registered seed and certified seed. Specific regulations are included for the importation, research and commercialization of seeds, ensuring that seeds destined for commerce are properly labeled and that quality standards are met before sale.
