The Seed Production and Trade Law, established in Nicaragua, aims to regulate, promote and supervise all activities related to the research, production and marketing of seeds and nursery plants. The law seeks to ensure the availability of quality seeds as a strategic resource for food security and agricultural productivity in the country. It thoroughly defines aspects such as certification, categorization, inspection and the different phases of the seed production process. In addition, the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, through the General Directorate of Seeds, is designated as the enforcement authority, in charge of implementing and supervising compliance with the law and its regulations. The law also creates a framework for the establishment of a National Seed System that coordinates and supervises the production and marketing of seeds in the country, including import and export. It establishes detailed procedures for the registration and regulation of all entities and persons involved in seed production and trade, and outlines clear sanctions for non-compliance.
