Law No. 29811 – Law Establishing a Moratorium on the Entry and Production of Living Modified Organisms into the National Territory for a Period of 10 Years

Law No. 29811 establishes a moratorium on the entry and production within the national territory of living modified organisms (LMOs) intended for release into the environment, with the purpose of strengthening national capacities, developing infrastructure, and generating the baseline information required for the adequate assessment and management of LMO release activities. The Law excludes from the moratorium certain LMOs intended for research in confined spaces, pharmaceutical and veterinary products, and LMOs intended for direct human or animal consumption or processing, subject to the corresponding risk assessments. Implementation of the moratorium includes control and surveillance mechanisms, baseline studies, capacity building, and biosafety research. The moratorium, originally established for ten years, was subsequently extended by Law No. 31111 until December 31, 2035.
