This Act introduces regulations to help reduce deforestation in the world's forests caused by the use of consumer goods in the UK. It aims to help protect the habitats of endangered species and provide assurances to UK shoppers that the products they are buying do not contribute to illegal deforestation. The Environment Act gives the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs the power to specify "forest risk products" in regulations. Schedule 17 of the Act defines "forest risk product" as a product produced from a plant, animal or living organism in a forest that is being converted, or may be converted, to agricultural use. Once a product has been designated as a forest risk product, it or products derived from it cannot be used by a company in its UK business activities unless the laws of the country where the product was produced have been complied with.
