Law 2173 of 2021: Life Areas for Ecological Restoration and Forest Creation in Colombia

Law 2173 of 2021 establishes "Areas of Life" in Colombia—zones designated by municipalities and districts for ecological restoration programs involving the planting of tree species, prioritizing native ones. The Law promotes the participation of citizens, companies, and territorial entities in forest recovery, the expansion of vegetation cover, and the conservation of strategic ecosystems. It also mandates the integration of Areas of Life with land-use planning instruments, the conducting of forest inventories, the monitoring of restored areas, and company responsibility regarding planting and maintenance programs.
