Law 2285 of 2023 Approving the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture in Colombia

Law 2285 of 2023 approved the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture—adopted by the FAO Conference in 2001—in Colombia. The Treaty establishes commitments regarding the conservation and sustainable use of plant genetic resources, the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from their use, the protection of farmers' rights, and the operation of a Multilateral System for Access and Benefit-sharing. Furthermore, it promotes research, information exchange, technology transfer, and capacity building to contribute to sustainable agriculture and food security. Colombia ratified the Treaty on October 9, 2024, and it entered into force for the country on January 7, 2025.
