Description

This treaty focuses on the conservation and sustainable use of plant genetic resources, vital elements for food security and sustainable agricultural development. It highlights the importance of an integrated approach that encompasses prospecting, conservation, characterization, evaluation and documentation of these resources, as well as the need to strengthen capacities, especially in developing countries, to carry out these essential tasks. The treaty establishes a Multilateral Access and Benefit-sharing System to facilitate access to a negotiated selection of plant genetic resources and ensure a fair and equitable distribution of benefits derived from their use. In addition, it recognizes and promotes the rights of farmers over their genetic resources, emphasizing the importance of their participation in decision-making and the distribution of benefits.
