Description
The decree aims to establish measures regarding glyphosate and genetically modified corn. Therefore, the competent authorities in biosafety matters are considered to be the Secretariats of Environment and Natural Resources, Agriculture and Rural Development, Health, as well as the Secretariat of Finance and Public Credit. Federal Public Administration dependencies and entities must refrain from acquiring, using, distributing, promoting, and importing genetically modified corn, glyphosate, or agrochemicals that contain it as an active ingredient. In addition, security measures will be established and corresponding sanctions will be imposed. The alternatives implemented for the gradual replacement of the use of glyphosate and agrochemicals must allow maintaining agricultural production, be safe for human health, the country's biocultural diversity, and the environment, and be free of toxic substances that represent acute, chronic, or subchronic hazards. Sustainable and culturally appropriate alternatives to glyphosate use will be promoted, which may include the use of other safe agrochemicals, biological or organic products, weed control practices that do not involve herbicides, among others. The National Council of Science and Technology will coordinate and support scientific and technological research to support and propose safe and sustainable alternatives. The transition period will be from the entry into force of the decree until March 31, 2024.
