National Biodiversity Strategy and its Action Plan

Start Date: 01/11/2017
End Date: 31/12/2022

Description

The National Biodiversity Strategy of Honduras 2018-2022 is more than an update, it is a new concept of strategy considered as the guiding integral framework, in the long term, of policies for conservation through the sustainable use of biological resources, oriented to development and poverty reduction. This framework integrates the values of participation, equity, responsibility, respect, commitment and solidarity, whose central point is to improve the quality of life of Honduran society. It involves the rational use of biodiversity, its protection and knowledge, to achieve its conservation in perpetuity. It is a framework congruent with the national efforts that have been carried out for many years and involves each and every one of the social and economic sectors, both public and private, and each and every one of the Honduran men and women. The formulation of the NBSAP is framed within the commitments acquired by Honduras when signing and ratifying the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), product of the Earth Summit held in Rio in 1992, specifically with regard to Article 6 of this Convention. This Article establishes the need for signatory countries to develop national sectoral and intersectoral strategies, plans or programs in accordance with the objectives of the Convention, or that the existing ones be adapted to it. In the case of Honduras, in addition to complying with what is stipulated in the aforementioned article and having the possibility of having an intersectoral guide for biodiversity management, the process of updating the NBSAP was also identified as an opportunity to analyze national progress in terms of compliance with the Convention, and to update existing information on the country's biodiversity, so that it is available for making decisions consistent with the national reality.
