Through Supreme Decree No. 008-2019-MIMP, the Peruvian State approved the National Gender Equality Policy (PNIG), reaffirming its commitment to the full exercise of the rights of all women in their diversity. This policy seeks to strengthen State action at all levels to guarantee equality and eliminate discrimination against women.
The PNIG recognizes the existence of structural discrimination based on sociocultural patterns that privilege the masculine, assign unequal roles and reinforce female subordination. In response, it establishes six priority objectives: reducing gender violence; ensuring sexual and reproductive rights; promoting women's participation in decision-making; guaranteeing their economic and social rights; eliminating institutional barriers; and combating discriminatory cultural patterns.
