Panama, through the Ministry of Agricultural Development, defines four strategic actions on the road to strengthening food systems, based on the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): 1 - Strengthening family farming, including actions such as creating legislation and a new institutional framework for sustainable rural territorial development and family farming, which considers planning, investment and financing for the management of the most lagging rural territories; implementing market development policies and public procurement programs for family farmers; and providing direct support and enhancing the capacities of small farmers, among others. 2 - Innovation and technology in production systems, through the promotion of scientific research, technological development, and the incorporation of agrotechnology. 3 - Establish new relationships with markets, through the revision of bilateral and multilateral treaties and the creation of policies to protect national producers. 4 - Environmental sustainability and resilience to climate change, encouraging the participation of youth in the implementation of proposals for environmental development, and strengthening policies and mechanisms to manage natural resources, promoting agroindustry and low-carbon agricultural production systems, among others.
