Mexico and FAO sign agreement to strengthen the agricultural and rural sector in the country

Description
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) together with the Secretariat of Agriculture and Rural Development of the Government of Mexico (SADER), update collaboration and sign project agreement: “Technical support for agricultural and fisheries policy, executing all priority activities with respect to productive chains. In 2021, FAO, together with other international agencies that work on agricultural and fisheries issues, assisted SADER in developing a strategy to maintain food production and supply assured in the short term during the contingency, and in contributing of strengthening the agricultural and rural sector in post-pandemic socioeconomic reconstruction in the medium and long term, thus preventing a health crisis from becoming a food crisis. The agreement signed now responds to the implementation of the recommendations that were generated in this technical assistance and focuses on articulated work on: conservation of aquatic, agricultural, microbial and livestock genetic resources of importance for food security; improvement of prioritized production chains; strengthening of the fishing sector; conservation and restoration of agricultural soils and protection of pollinators. In addition, it will support with methodologies to improve the strategic information produced by the Agri-Food and Fisheries Information Service (SIAP), and with strengthening capacities in the SADER. The work period will be 2022-2023.
