Decline in RIP agriculture in LAC
In 2023, the relative internal productivity of the Agriculture sector in Latin America and the Caribbean was 44 (with total productivity coefficient = 100), showing its lag compared to sectors with higher productivity, according to the sectoral graph of the report (ECLAC, 2025).
Agricultural Productivity in Latin America and the
Up to 70% of agricultural productivity growth in Latin America and the Caribbean is reduced when environmental costs are taken into account. The increase in production has been driven mainly by the intensive use of inputs rather than by technological or managerial improvements, highlighting the need for policies that integrate sustainability and innovation. (IDB, 2025)
Agroecological practices in tropical livestock far
The article reviews successful agroecological experiences in tropical livestock systems in Latin America and the Caribbean, highlighting cases in Colombia, Cuba, Haiti, Mexico, and Guadeloupe. It analyzes how integrated practices—such as adapted genetic management, nutrition with local resources, hormone-free reproductive management, and natural parasite control—improve sustainability, resilience, and animal productivity. It includes emblematic studies such as Finca Tosoly (Colombia) and the “Lèt Agogo” program (Haiti), which combine food production, energy, and ecosystem services. The research proposes a framework for transitioning to resilient, multifunctional, low-emission livestock systems based on biodiversity and the circular economy.

USAID Caribbean Agricultural Productivity Improvement Activity (CAPA)
Initiative aimed at improving food security and promoting sustainable farming practices through increased fruit and vegetable productivity of smallholder farmers. It articulates interventions in productive technical assistance, strengthening commercial linkages with buyers and agro-input suppliers, modernization of rural extension systems, and climate data management for decision-making. Its objective is to increase market-led agricultural production, improve smallholder connectivity with regional value chains, and strengthen climate resilience of the Caribbean agri-food sector.
Chocolate Island — Cocoa, Carbon and Community
The project drives Trinidad and Tobago's cacao and chocolate industry toward a post-pandemic, ESG-aligned productive model through an innovative approach that integrates the cacao value chain with carbon capture mechanisms and community development, packaged together in an impact investment offer called "Cacao, Carbon and Community." The initiative seeks to attract impact investors by delivering simultaneous returns across three dimensions: financial, through the commercialization of fine cacao and single-origin chocolate; environmental, by valorizing ecosystem services and carbon credits generated by cacao agroforestry systems; and social, by strengthening local farming communities and improving their livelihoods. In doing so, the project positions Trinidad and Tobago as a destination for sustainable investment in the Caribbean agrifood sector, leveraging the country's historic reputation in fine flavor cacao production to build a differentiated and regionally replicable value proposition.
Pilot testing a blue carbon credit system in Trinidad and Tobago
The objective of the project is to design a high-quality blue carbon credit scheme that aims to improve the digital mapping, monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) of ecosystem services while promoting the management and ownership of natural capital, as a practical opportunity to improve livelihoods and generate income.

National Development Strategy 2016-2030 (Trinidad and Tobago)
Long-term planning instrument aimed at achieving developed-nation status by 2030. It organizes national priorities around five development themes—people, governance, infrastructure, business competitiveness, and the environment—under a vision of sustainable prosperity, economic diversification, and climate resilience. The strategy explicitly recognizes food security as a national imperative given the country's high dependence on food imports, and designates agriculture, agro-processing, and fisheries as priority sectors for economic transformation. Environmental and natural resource management—including the terrestrial and marine ecosystems that underpin food production—form a cross-cutting axis throughout the document. Implementation relies on public-private partnerships, results-based budgeting, and monitoring frameworks aligned with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
National Adaptation Plan for the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago
National strategic framework setting Trinidad and Tobago's vision, objectives, and 90 climate change adaptation strategies across seven priority sectors: coastal zone resources, agriculture and food security, water resources, human health, biodiversity, infrastructure, and financial services. Applies Climate Resilient Development Pathways (CRDPs) and Dynamic Adaptive Policy Pathways (DAPP).
National Food Safety Policy 2018-2023.
The guiding framework designed to establish an effective, coordinated, and risk-based national food control system. It aims to protect consumer health and facilitate trade by harmonizing legislation, strengthening foodborne disease surveillance, and improving laboratory infrastructure and inspection systems.
